PechaKucha Night is an event during which creative people representing different fields can meet and present their works and ideas. It is an opportunity to obtain first-hand information from participants themselves not from journalists or critics. In order to avoid long comments and make an author focus on the key aspects, the 20x20 format has been introduced. It means that 20 images are demonstrated for 20 seconds each – fairly enough to tell about oneself, one’s idea and not enough to bore the audience.
PechaKucha Night (pecha-kucha is a Japanese term for the sound of “chit-chat”) emerged in Japan, where architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham architecture organised the event for the first time. It was a night for young architects, designers and artists to meet, talk and demonstrate their work to a broader audience.
Now PechaKucha Night events are organised all over the world; and from 2007 also in Latvia. The first of them took place in Andrejsala followed by lectures in the small hall of the Riga New Theatre, in the Design House and in the exhibition hall Arsenāls of the Latvian National Art Museum. The first Pecha Kucha Night outside Riga took place in Liepāja in the cinema Balle.
