| Lecture DESIGN OF SUSTAINABLE IMMOBILITY / 3.12. 19:30 |
|
From 3 to 5 December the New Media Culture Centre in cooperation with the Association of Contemporary Culture NGOs organise an international seminar Organised Networks on management of culture networks. It will focus on issues of sustainable culture development.
Representatives from more than 20 contemporary culture NGOs, art centres of the new media and networks from Latvia, other Baltic countries, Nordic countries, other European regions and the Caucasus countries will participate in the seminar.
On Thursday, 3 December at 19.30 RIXC and kim? invite everyone to come to Spīķeri where a Dutch media theorist Eric Kluitenberg will provide a public lecture Design of Sustainable Immobility. A contradictory topicality will be viewed during the lecture, i.e. despite the current economic crisis mobility continues to spread all over the world. On the one hand, we cannot deny a person’s right to free movement. However, on the other hand, it is clear that our planet cannot ensure the hyper-mobility of today. We need new design ideas how to create connections among people and how to organise an alternative lifestyle which is less determined by mobility triggered acceleration. Therefore, designers, architects and artist are especially invited to attend the lecture to have a joint discussion about ideas and possible models for addressing this problem.
Eric Kluitenberg is a media theorist, writer, author of a book Delusive Space (2008) and an organiser of technology and culture events. He works at the Culture and Policy Centre De Balie in Amsterdam, lectures and publishes articles on culture, the new media and culture policy on a regular basis. Currently De Balie and RIXC together with a broad network of partner organisations are preparing a new international festival of sustainable immobility ElektroSmog. The festival will take place on the internet in the online regime from 17 to 20 March 2010 by simultaneously connecting 10 venues of events worldwide.
During the seminar on 4 and 5 December (from 11.00 to 18.00 in the RIXC Media Room) participants of working groups will have a discussion about networks as a new institutional form, about sustainable development of culture, about the organised networks, infrastructures of peer-to-peer networks, alternative economics and creative industries. To popularise the idea of immobility an online participation in the seminar will be provided for the following participants: Rossiter, the author of the Organised Networks (online from Shanghai); John Thackara, an expert on sustainability issues, the founder of a design forum Doors of Perception (online from India); and Armin Medosch, a media theorist, researcher of social media and activist of the open code (online from Wienna).
New cooperation models, instruments and protocols for the Art and Renewable Energy Network newly established by RIXC and its partner organisations will be developed. Therefore, on Saturday, 5 December at 11.00 a lecture by a Greek technology researcher Michael Psallidas will take place in the RIXC Media Room during which the lecturer will talk about the latest tendencies in development of peer-to-peer infrastructures and the distributed energy networks.
Programmes for the public on 4 and 5 December at 20.00 include presentations of art and culture projects by participants of the seminar: Kultivator / Sweden, Baltan Laboratories / The Netherlands, One Minute Video Festival / Armenia, Survival Kit / Contemporary Art Centre, Latvia, Core / Latvia, Arctic Perspectives Project / Lorna, Iceland; MoTA / Clovenia; MARIN a project of mobile residences / Finland; GeoAir / Georgia; Homo Novous / JTI, Latvia; a project of Nordic-Baltic Video Archive / Noah Pixelache festival network / Finland.
