Jarmarka 2009 “Art Is Born Here” / December 17 - 30

An annual exhibition-fair of students’ works JARMARKA, whose motto is “Art Is Born Here”, is taking place in Latvian Academy of Arts from 17 to 30 December.

It is a charity campaign whose authors and organisers are an events agency Pareizā ķīmija   in cooperation with Latvian Academy of Arts and an advertisement agency Airport.

Such a fair is organised in Latvia for the seventh consecutive year. 300 young artists with more than 8000 works take part in the fair which is available for every interested person.

Visitors of the fair can both view and buy original and unique students’ works. This year, as usual, students from the departments of Visual Communication, Environmental Art, Functional Design, Ceramics, Textile Art, Glass, Sculpture, Fashion Art, Restoration, Scenography, Art History, Art Science, Metal Design, Painting and Graphics participate in JARMARKA. This is one of the most striking events in the field of art both for students and visitors, as approximately 8000 new and unseen art items are presented together in one place.

Rector of Latvian Academy of Arts Aleksejs Naumovs says: “JARMARKA is a unique event which has become a kind of brand, and it associates with a wonderful Christmas feeling. It is a place, where everyone can find something beautiful, cute and original for oneself and one’s relatives. I am pleased for this renewed tradition of the 1930s which provides an opportunity for inhabitants and guests of Latvia to support students and a wonderful cultural monument, as well as to warm one’s own and one’s relatives’ hearts with valuable gifts."

The traditional charity campaign of JARMARKA, which was very successful during previous years, will continue this year. Part of funds generated during JARMARKA will be donated for the restoration of the Academy’s Aula. Thus not only students, but also buyers of the exhibited works, will donate money for the restoration of the wall paintings in the Academy’s Aula.
“We have used the funds generated from the previous JARMARKAS to restore the ceiling of the Academy’s Aula. We have also started to uncover the wall paintings in the first floor corridor of the Academy. This work will continue also this year thanks to the money collected during JARMARKA,” says Aleksejs Naumovs. The pre-restoration work has been extremely important for preservation and restoration of the building and paintings which are of heritage value. According to restorer Inga Meldere, the Aula’s ceiling needs urgent conservation. The cracks in the ceiling and walls have already been filled in, the unique art nouveau paintings have been uncovered thus providing the basis for starting the restoration. However, substantial resources are still necessary to restore the former splendour of the Great Aula.

“For the seventh consecutive year Latvian Academy of Arts is hosting a charity event full of active energy, festive and positive atmosphere – a fair of students’ works JARMARKA. This year it is connected with the key objective of its home – the educational process. It is interesting to mention that the students, who submitted their works for their first JARMARKA as first-year students, received a Master’s degree this spring. Thus we can speak about a JARMARKA generation in art. Like a talented student, who acquires professionalism and mastery during his or her studies, JARMARKA has become a live organism of the Academy, where we can find everything we desire– sincerity, talent, professionalism, smiles, warmth and energy. It seems that the Academy’s Christmas without JARMARKA is not possible any more, therefore we welcome everyone to share joy!” – says Elīna Ģibiete, the head of the Foreign and Exhibitions Department of the Academy.

“The creation of art is a unique process which starts with inspiration followed by delivery of an idea and its creation. In our opinion, this process and every newly created work is as special, cherished and unique as a newborn baby. An unspeakable wonder takes place in the walls of the Academy of Arts every year – art is born, and JARMARKA is the place to come to see it!” – Lolita Ozoliņa, the project director of an advertisement agency Airport.

“JARMARKA is like a Christmas gift for all inhabitants and guests of Latvia who have an opportunity to gain insight into ideas and solutions of students, to derive inspiration, as well as to purchase Christmas gifts for the beloved ones and for one’s own pleasure! This is one of the most colourful and joyful winter events, as all works of art bought by you, will be like a present for students and Latvian Academy of Arts,” says Gundega Tihi, the author of JARMARKA’S idea and its organiser, the director of an events agency Pareizā ķīmija.
